Should We Censor Music?

Should radio stations have to censor songs they play on the air? Personally, I don't think so. Yes, there are reasons that songs with explicit material in them are censored, such as if families listen to the station and whatnot, but that should be up to the listener to decide what they want to listen to. If someone hears something they don't like on the radio, they have the freedom to change the station to listen to something else. Do you think music on the radio should be censored?

  2. I agree that we should not censor music, or media in general. I use to like in the UK and they do nothing of the sort, it is odd to them that us as Americans do. It all comes back to our country being to politically correct; for how free of a country we are we seem to be mighty constricted. The other day I was in the mall shopping, and the store was playing Bruno Mars’s it will rain. A verse of the song is “There’s no religion that could save me No matter how long my knees are on the floor So keep in mind all the sacrifices I’m making Will keep you by my side Will keep you from walking’ out the door.” There verse took out religion and sacrifice. To me not only is this ruining the art of music itself but also are borderline shenanigans to do. Its not pin pointing any one religion and its sure as heck not bad like certain swear words or suggestive phrases. Where do we stop? Where do people draw the line of get the hell over it?

  3. I completely agree that we shouldn't sensor music with the exception of racial slurs. It's ironic that we censor music because in doing so we just further empower the words and their negative connotation thus making them worthy of something to be censored. If I went up to some one who didn't speak, shook there hand, and told them with a smile "you are just the dumbest mother fucker I have ever had the shitty displeasure to meet" they would probably just smile. The only reason such words are "bad" is because society makes them so. Censoring just perpetuates our ability to offend haha. That said I think slurs should be censored because their extremely malicious and violent historical background in culture. When you think about what a "fucking asshole" is literally (or any variation of cuss words really) it's typically fairly humorous. Slurs on the other hand were created and used to mentally, morally, and literally deny people worth, to strip them of their humanity. There are simply too many people who would be deeply effected by such terms for it to become common practice to use them. I no more have a freedom to go up and punch you then I should have the right to assault some one with racial slurs, and on a legal level you likely could file a charge of assault against someone for using a racial slur as assault is defined as "the apprehension of immediate harm" and the words were wrought from dealing harm. Using one may also constitute a hate crime (i'm not sure about that though). Point being some censorship is just absurd in my opinion, but words have a meaning and the words whose menaing was derived to deal an injury should be respected, and mixing them in with lyrics will not teach that respect to the general populace even if the lyrics themselves might be.
